The Good Doctors: Dr Ingrid Bassett

Dr Ingrid Bassett

Dermatologist, Central Dermatology, Albury

“I first knew about RATIONALE about 20 years ago. A representative from the company came to visit me in my practice in Sydney, and I started to use the products. I was so impressed that I put them in my clinic and I’ve never looked back since.” Below, Dr Ingrid Bassett opens up about her first love (skin), constantly evolving—and her 20-year relationship with RATIONALE.

What drew you to dermatology?
“As a teenager, I was always interested in makeup and skincare and enjoyed playing around with it. So while I was studying medicine, I knew I wanted to specialise but I didn’t know what I wanted to specialise in, and as I went through my internship and residency, I fell in love with every discipline. Eventually I realised, ‘I’m going to go back to my first true love: skin’. I just had a deep feeling that it was the right place for me.”

What inspires you in this industry?
“Improving people’s skin. Absolutely. Improving it and knowing that every person that leaves my practice leaves with better skin. I see it in both men and women; men are oftentimes more careless about their skin but those who do care and invest in it will leave with better skin. The people I always want to work with and help are the ones you want to help themselves, too.”

What’s been your proudest moment?
“My most enjoyable time in dermatology has been being in private practice. But I am most proud of my daughter.”

What do you love most about being a dermatologist?
“I love the fact that dermatology is medical, surgical and cosmetic. I’m always interested in and challenged by the variety of disease that I see—you can’t really get jaded like in other specialities. At the end of the day, it’s the wonderful results that I see that keep me going—it’s so rewarding.”

What does confidence mean to you?
“In dermatology, confidence to me means really understanding the skin and knowing exactly what you’re doing—and doing the right thing to treat your patient. In relation to skin confidence, it means knowing your skin is the best it can be. Being confident that you’re doing everything you can to look after yourself in order to achieve optimal skin health.”

Do you have a role model?
“I look at Richard [Parker, RATIONALE Founder] ...I think he’s a great role model because of his discipline to his studies and practice, the enjoyment of what he does—and his absolute enthusiasm for life.”

What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt?
“The first person you have to trust is yourself. But I don’t think there is ever ‘one best lesson’ as such. I believe that a you get older, if you don’t learn a lesson every day then you’re not evolving. As long as you’re alive, you should evolve.”

And any words to live by?
“Be kind to everyone else around you because that means you’re being kind to yourself. And what you put out into the world is what you get back.”
