A Day in the Life with Shella Martin

Celebrity Makeup Artist and Salon XVI Co-Founder

From her makeup wizardry, to an on-point style game—and that rainbow bright hair, taking a peek inside Shella Martin’s life is like peering through a kaleidoscope: bright, happy, colourful. Like Dorothy waking up in Munchkinland, surrounded by the Lollipop Guild.

Look a little closer and you see the gleam of accomplishment (Martin’s CV includes Freelance Makeup Artist, Sessions Stylist and Salon XVI Hair and Makeup Co-Founder), an impressive, star-studded clientele and a visage so radiant, it’s inspired more than one Sunday masking sesh.

But perhaps the most appealing is the mother of two’s down-to-earth nature; her appreciation for getting back to the simple life, a morning cup of tea—and the great Darryl Kerrigan. Here, the RATIONALE Luminary takes us inside her day…

“I pretty much wake up with a hot cup of tea in my hand every day: Yorkshire Tea, splash of milk—I can’t start my day without it.

Luckily, I’ve always been a morning person, especially so with two school-aged children. Getting them to school on time is the main focus in the morning. Since my work routine is different every day, my husband and I have a super flexible routine for school drop-off. I love that every day is different for me, I love the freelance lifestyle. One thing that never changes day to day, is my RATIONALE Essential Six routine.

Different work locations give me different skin needs. So, I layer product according to the environment I’m going to be in. My DNA skin test at RATIONALE gave me the information I needed to best prescribe my skincare.

My morning routine without fail is a light Catalyst Cleanse in the shower, then Immunologist Serum, Super Antioxidant Serum and PhotoDynamic Day Cream and PhotoDynamic Eye Cream. I recently introduced the Super Antioxidant Serum a few times a week to my routine. That’s the beauty of the range, I can always adjust it to how my skin is feeling and looking.

I just love radiant looking skin and a brushed up brow, so I apply B3-T Superfluid Sunscreen SPF50+, Beautiful Skin and Beautiful Bronze. I highlight by stippling Beautiful Light on my cheekbones and below my brow. Two fingerprints of concealer on the inner corner of my eyes, a coat or two of mascara and some gloss. That’s it for me.

I’m 37, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been with my skin. I’ve been on my RATIONALE journey for two years now; I love living in my best skin and throwing away foundation.

My work time is shared between location travel, client meetings, production meetings, beauty product reviews, editorial shoots and my celebrity clientele. I do everything through my iPhone. I’m pretty much a cyborg, it’s that much a part of my life; my phone is a digital version of myself. Weather permitting, I love to steal a few minutes in the sun when working—replying to emails and browsing social media on my phone helps to recharge the batteries.

More recently though, I’ve been trying to disconnect from my phone a little, reading less from a light screen and more from printed page… everything from Grazia UK to Vogue Living to Emotional Intensity.

When it comes to meals, breakfast is usually on the go in my car and a skill I have mastered.

As much as I love the idea of lunch, life as a freelance artist can present difficulties to that routine. Sometimes on set, 4.30pm rolls around and I’ve missed lunch! So I always take the opportunity when it presents itself. My all-time favourite lunch is a sashimi salad with wasabi and soy, it doesn’t put me in a carbohydrate comma in the mild of the day, when I need to be go go go!

At the end of the day, the school run is shared between myself, my husband and our family nanny (I truly think she may be an angel).

As we roll into the warmer months, I will be spending more time on the front porch soaking up the afternoon sun, enjoying a cup of tea, chatting with our wonderful neighbours, watching the children play. Community is so important to our family—it’s how we survive. It’s the reason we moved out of the CBD: we want our children to create similar memories to the ones we did growing up. My husband also happens to freelance and run our hair salon, so it also provides a quiet escape from the hectic work lives we lead. How’s the serenity…

Dinner is when our family comes together; it’s the meal we never compromise on. It’s how I refuel and prepare nutritionally for the next day. I must confess, my husband does take care of all the cooking. He plans all the meals out on Sunday morning, so I know what I have to look forward to for the coming week… lucky me!

When I do take time for myself, I absolutely love my Immunologist Mask. I find any excuse to use it on myself and my clientele; the results are instant. I have my own at-home Immunologist Mask ritual: apply, then leave for 45 minutes to soak in, followed by hopping into a hot shower. I enjoy the steam on my face for the three minutes, then I spend at least two minutes massaging the product off. Hopping out of the shower, my skin is vibrant and glowing.

My end-of-day routine includes cleansing with ProCeramide Cleanser, then I apply Catalyst Serum and finish with DNA Night Cream. I always review the following day’s schedule—gotta make sure those alarms are set!”
